Our Story

Creative Koji LLC, founded by Gabe Garms, is a Pacific Northwest based company dedicated to crafting artisanal miso products using locally grown and organically sourced ingredients. We combine traditional techniques with innovative local flavors, offering consumers high quality, non traditional miso options that celebrate the region's diverse culinary heritage.

Our product line features unique miso flavors like black bean, pink bean, pumpkin seed, pink bean/king bolete, dandelion root, burdock root, alongside experimental blends with wild foods and seasonal produce. Each batch undergoes rigorous quality control measures to uphold our standards of excellence.

Beyond retail sales, we collaborate with restaurants and food enthusiasts to showcase miso's versatility. We also engage the community through educational workshops and tastings, fostering a deeper appreciation for fermented foods and local ingredients.

About Gabe Garms

Gabe Garms has been working with fermentation for over 20 years. His interest began after reading The Art of Fermentation, which led him into years of exploring lacto-ferments, fermented beverages, sourdough, vinegars, and cheeses. The release of The Noma Guide to Fermentation further deepened his focus, inspiring extensive work developing misos made from a wide range of local and alternative ingredients, beyond traditional soy-based ferments.

Alongside his fermentation practice, Gabe co-founded Raven’s Roots Naturalist School in Western Washington, where he taught for over a decade. His work there included permaculture, ethnobotany, wild food foraging, wilderness skills, and bird language and behavior.

He lives in Twisp, Washington with his wife Reisha and son Rowan, where he continues to work with fermentation, wild foods, and seasonal ingredients. He also plays guitar and sings in his free time.
